This week has been fantastic in Red Squirrel Class!
In Phonics, we have been looking at the alternative graphemes for "j". We couldn't believe how many there are! We wrote words with the "j" sound such as jelly, gym, giant, George, dodge, bridge and added in the sound buttons!
In English, it all got very excited! Word has it that a dragon has been lurking around in Clive, hiding out in the woods. We went on a dragon hunt to see if the rumours were true and we spotted some clues!! Huge dragon footprints, knocked down branches from trees and a poster! We had to write our own "beware" poster so that we could warn people in the village! The writing was SUPERB! I was so proud with all of Red Squirrel class for putting so much effort into their posters.
In Maths, we have come to the end of our units in Year 1 and 2. Year 1 explored how subtraction is the inverse of subtraction. We were given an addition equation and had to write the inverse. It was tricky, but we are definitely used to using our + and - symbols now. Year 2 focused on the link between doubling and halving. We were able to double and halve 2-digit numbers, using objects to support us when needed.
In RE, we focused on the idea of "forgiveness." We talked about the parable of the Lost Son being all about forgiving and so we acted out scenarios to show how important it is to forgive one another. We then filled a heart with lots of words and phrases that we might use when we are forgiving or asking for forgiveness.
In Science, we had to plan an experiment. The knights in the castle are preparing for an attack! They need to make a chute for their canonballs. The material that the chute is lined with needs to be smooth so that the balls travel down quickly. We drew a plan of our experiment and chose different materials to test. We will carry it out next week so stay tuned for the results!
In Topic, we learnt all about the battle of Hastings. We found out that William the Conqueror came across from France, because he believed he should be King. He went into battle and fought the English, killing King Harold (apparently with an arrow to the eye!) and won! Once he became king, he built the first Norman castles in the UK and some of them are still standing today such as Windsor Castle.
In DT, we created some 3D shapes and had to test them to check their stability. We had to test how many books we could pile on top of the shapes before the would curmble. The cylinder was the winner and we concluded that this was because it has no corners, so the weight was evenly distributed.
We are continuing looking at "healthy me" in PSHE and this week talked about why medicine is important when we are poorly. We then dicussed how it is really important to only take medicine when we are poorly and when an adult has given it to us.
Have a really lovely weekend!!
