Another week down in Red Squirrel class and we are on the countdown to half term!

Our Phonics sounds this week have been igh, ie, i and i-e. We have been looking at the alternative graphemes for the long vowel sound "igh" and Year 1 have been introduced to the i-e split digraph (in words such as slide, ride, kite etc.) Next week we will be moving onto the alternative graphemes for the long vowel sound "oa."

In English, we continued looking in our book "Pet Dragon: Dare to care!" and we wrote some fantastic instructions all about how to teach your dragon to fly. Year 1 began to use numbered steps and time conjunctions in their writing, while Year 2 extended to using adverbs and thinking of a title and equipment list in theirs.

In Maths, Year 1 have just finished their unit of work looking at numbers from 6 - 10. We are now moving onto "additive structures" where we will be introduced to the + symbol and begin to use this to create number sentences looking at two addends.

Year 2 have been practising counting in 2s and using their knowledge of multiples of 2 to create multiplication equations e.g 2 x 6 = 12. We know that factors are the numbers which we multiple together and the product is the answer. We are now moving onto counting in 10s. If you can be practising this at home, that would be super!!

In Science we carried out another investigation. Mike the Knight was having problems everytime he crossed his drawbridge; the items in his pocket were falling into the moat!! He needed us to test which objects would sink or float so that he could rescue some. We made careful predictions and then carried out our investigation, drawing conclusions from this.

In Topic, we learned all about the training that Knights had to go through. We found out that boys aged 7 would leave home and live in a castle as part of their training! You didn't become a Knight until you were 21. We had fun making our own movable knights using split pins.

We are coming to the end of our RE unit looking at the big question "Who is Jewish and how do they live?" This week we thought about Hannukah, the festival of lights. We read the story of the Macabees and then drew some pictures of the story, thinking about the parts that are important to Jewish people.

In Computing this week we made our own rockets using the designs that we created on the laptops. We are hoping that next week we can blast them into the sky!

The children looked amazing in their Numberblocks costumes today!! We had a super number day.

Have a lovely weekend everyone,
